Walworth Academy, Southwark, London

General Demolition has been appointed by Balfour Beatty Construction to perform the phased demolition of school buildings at Walworth Academy in Shorncliffe Road, off the Old Kent Road in Southwark, London SE1. The demolition works will pave the way for construction of new buildings on the Upper School site scheduled for completion in late 2009.
 
The first phase of demolition work involved soft stripping and demolition of the steel-framed cafeteria, caretaker’s two-storey house and a single-storey outbuilding as well as the removal of the ground slab and foundations. The six-week programme was performed during the academy’s summer break. Phase 2 demolition of the six-storey main school block will follow in 2009.

Balfour Beatty Construction was selected by Southwark Council and educational charity ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) Schools to build the new Walworth Academy which has been designed by Building Design Partnership (BDP).

The ARK-sponsored Walworth Academy is a mixed, non-selective school with no religious affiliations. It replaced the previous Walworth School in September 2007. Currently split between two sites, the new Academy will be consolidated on the Shorncliffe Road site with pupils moving into brand new facilities in spring 2010.
