In their distinctive red tunics, Chelsea Pensioners donned General Demolition hard hats before delivering the first blows in the demolition of the Royal Chelsea Hospital infirmary in west London.
The old 1960s building was demolished by General Demolition as part of a planned programme to build a new care home and to modernise the Pensioners’ living quarters.
The project is being paid for entirely through a fundraising campaign. The Chelsea Pensioners' Appeal seeks to raise £35 million over the next four years.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, which dates back to 1692, is a Government sponsored home for pensioners of the British Army and today looks after around 300 men. Work on the new Infirmary building is scheduled to commence in Spring 2006.
