![]() General Demolition is performing complex ‘cut and carve’ demolition works for a £60m renovation programme – known as Project Beacon –at John Lewis’ flagship store at Oxford Street in London’s West End. General Demolition’s work is being carried out in a ‘live’ retail environment requiring minimum disruption to the shop and its customers. Cut and carve demolition techniques include core drilling and concrete bursting. The programme will transform John Lewis Oxford Street into a large, unified shopping space. Two new light wells will be created at the north and south sides of the building to make way for the installation of two state-of-the-art, glass-sided escalators giving customers uninterrupted views of 20 departments spanning seven floors. The project, which is scheduled for completion in Autumn 2007, will increase selling space by 16%, greatly improving the shopping experience for John Lewis customers.
