General Demolition is carrying out asbestos removal, soft stripping works, demolition and removal of a 1960s commercial office block at 16-19 Gresse Street, London W1.
The building is situated in an awkward triangular site adjacent to The Fashion Retail Academy in London’s West End, close to Oxford Street. The demolition project is being performed in association with professional team members Balfour Beatty Construction and cost consultants Jackson Coles and is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2007.
The seven-storey office block comprises six floors of office space plus a plant room on the top floor. Two mini-excavators fitted with hydraulic hammers and a Bobcat skid steer lifted to the roof by mobile crane are performing the progressive, floor by floor demolition works to ground level.
Maintaining regular communications with the local residents is an important part of General Demolition’s role. Noise and dust is being kept to a minimum as the building is situated in a residential area with a shared party wall.
The demolition will pave the way for a new seven-storey office building by developers Derwent London. The new building, designed by architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, will feature an angular façade that reflects the existing street frontages.
