General Demolition was engaged by Big Yellow to perform sensitive demolition works at the former Fulham Power Station in West London. The site, which lies adjacent to the world-renowned Chelsea Harbour Club in Townmead Road, is being converted into a ‘flagship’ self storage facility by the Big Yellow Self Storage Company.
The work involved retaining key historical parts of the remaining buildings – including the six, separate transformer chambers - and the removal of more than 2,000 tonnes of steelwork.
This prestigious contract demonstrates General Demolition’s ability to perform demolition work to the very highest standard. The site lies within a designated conservation area. It is surrounded by residential housing and industrial units as well as being situated literally next door to the Harbour Club made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
The original power station was built in 1897 and later became the largest such municipal facility in the country. After partial demolition in the 1980s to make way for the Harbour Club, it was used by as an energy substation.
The new 20,000 sq m facility will bring the redundant building into use in line with the Mayor’s London Plan to promote the retention of London’s historic environment.
