General Demolition has completed the second phase of demolition works at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey as part of an exciting £27.6 million redevelopment programme. The demolition of the Main Grandstand, which was built in 1927, will make way for a new 11,000 capacity grandstand that will be used for events throughout the year.
Preparations for the Phase 2 works at the racecourse started immediately after The Derby in June. The 1914 Building has been completely demolished and demolition of the Main Grandstand was completed at the end of September 2007. Building work will commence in October and will be completed in March 2009.
The first part of the programme started in September 2006 and involved knocking down the Rosebery Stand, the oldest part of the current Grandstand.
The demolition works pave the way for a new grandstand and modern conference facilities that will help to generate the necessary year round income to allow Epsom to continue to host the Vodafone Derby, the richest horse race in Europe and one of the world’s most famous sporting events. Traditionally held over the first weekend in June, Epsom Downs Racecourse has staged The Derby since 1780.
