The demolition of a 1960s tower block on Wellington Road in St John’s Wood, London paved the way for the development of 25 high quality apartments, including two luxury penthouses. General Demolition was engaged by main contractor Laing O’Rourke to demolish the seven-storey Embassy Court building, including two roof gardens.
Working within such a tight space posed several logistical challenges for General Demolition’s 12-strong site team. With a hospital to the north, a petrol station to the south, private residences to the rear and a busy, red route to the front with passing pedestrians, minimising noise, dust and vibration was paramount. In addition, the main railway line to Marylebone runs just eight metres beneath ground level as well as the Metropolitan and Jubilee underground lines.
Small excavators were craned onto the roof of the building. Demolition waste was removed down the central core of the building before being transported from the site to General Demolition’s Environmental Resource Park in Walton on Thames.
