Project Summary

The refurbishment and development of the Fairfield Halls Theatre is a key part of Croydon Council’s regeneration plans, set for completion in late 2018.

Originally built in the 1960s the theatre has been both a major concert venue and a centre for local community events, playing host to names such as Pink Floyd, Queen and The Beatles.

With Croydon Council’s plans to renovate the original building, General Demolition were brought in by Brick by Brick Ltd to undertake the enabling works. It was critical that General Demolition complete the work within the proposed cost and to a strict deadline to prevent delay to the ongoing regeneration project.

With the age of the building, a significant amount of asbestos was identified during the Refurbishment & Demolition survey, which required removal as part of the internal strip out. Â This was managed by General Demolition’s specialist subcontractor to meet our strict health and safety standards.

Stripping of fixtures in The Concert hall, Ashcroft Theatre and Arnhem Gallery, included furniture, carpets doors and ceilings – this was carried out entirely by hand and required a 30m bird cage scaffold in the main hall.

Careful planning was needed to keep the project on target and to ensure the flow of work did not stall. Teams were co-ordinated to begin the strip back ready for asbestos survey and removal, then move to the next area to repeat the process – continuing once the asbestos was removed.

The overall recycling rate was 95% and the project was complete on time and in budget, as requested by Croydon Council.
